Our first trade show, Speciality Fine Food Fair 2016

Having frequently been a visitor at this event, I had an inkling what it was going to be like. It’s always particularly tempting going to trade shows to see the new trends, as well as gobbling free samples! Being on the exhibitor side I realised that less gobbling and more savouring is appreciated.

I was a little bit of a mad rush before the show, particularly making the final points of messages and design for marketing material, then getting it all printed. Not forgetting the sourcing of the ingredients, blending, cutting, boxing, labelling and sealing of each guest bag. We had driven up the night before the three day trade fair because we had been exhibiting at the Moreton-in-Marsh agricultural show – so quite a contrast of events and crazy!

I was surprised at how many international visitors there were and that some were interested in GB chew. This has encouraged me to look into exporting sooner than I had expected. Spain and Germany were the two main countries that expressed an interest , but as I looked into where there is a market for GB chew, there were some unexpected revelations, for example someone said that South Korea likes Organic, Fair-trade, health-orientated products. Anyway in light of Brexit and the post referendum sterling weakness we are looking into exporting in Europe where there are easier trade links set up (for now).

It was helpful to practice speaking about the products to other businesses instead of friends and customers at the van, markets and events. As you can imagine these trade shows are heaving with people, and buyers are hard to catch when they walk past. If they have not heard of your brand before and you don’t know them, you end up staring at their chest to catch their name badge and where they are from.

I have had some promising leads from the show, although we have still not aggressively followed them up due to not being able to produce to meet the demand, we are hoping that will be resolved this February and we will then be in full sales mode for a successful 2017!
